Therapy Services
Midlands
Psychological Services offers a wide range of clinical
psychology services. The following information refers specifically
to Clinical Psychology and Psychological Therapy.
How can clinical psychologists help you?
It
is difficult to give an exhaustive list of the kinds of difficulties
with which we can help, but some examples are, anxiety, depression,
fears and phobias, habit disorders such as obsessive-compulsive
problems, eating disorders, low self-esteem, relationship problems,
suicidal feelings, anger management and assertiveness problems.
Currently we are only able to offer help to adults and adolescents over
the age of fifteen.
What clinical psychologists do not do.
We
are not physicians; we do not prescribe medication or give injections.
We do not give physical examinations. We do not help with housing or
benefits. We do not read peoples' minds!
How
clinical psychologists help.
When
we are assessing problems, we will ask you questions about your current
and past life and your problems. We will often ask you to fill in some
questionnaires or take some practical tests. These are nothing to worry
about and are always explained.
When
we offer treatment, or "psychological therapy", this is always
individually tailored on the basis of the assessment, and will always be
discussed with you to see if you agree. There are a number of different
approaches to such therapy, and what you are offered will partly depend
on your individual circumstances, and partly on the approach and skills
of the particular Clinical Psychologist you see. If the Psychologist
who assesses you feels that you would be best helped using an approach
in which he or she is not skilled, you will be asked to see one of our
colleagues.
Some
therapy focuses more on thoughts, some on behaviour, and some on
feelings and early experience. Sometimes therapy focuses upon the
relationship between the Psychologist and the client and sometimes upon
understanding you and your experiences as well as possible. It may be
helpful for people to learn relaxation techniques, or to learn to become
more assertive. Sometimes therapy can involve a combination of several
of these approaches, so, Psychologists may make quite specific
suggestions, and sometimes be listening carefully and making
interpretations.
We
often ask you to do things between appointments, such as think about
various issues, keep diaries/records, read books or leaflets, try out
techniques or suggestions, or practice things like relaxation exercises.
We
will sometimes, if you agree, and if it is necessary, write letters or
reports for other people, such as doctors. This will always be discussed
with you, and you will always be informed of their contents.
We
will usually agree with you a number of appointments for which we will
see you. At the end of that time we will review our input with you and,
of course, if you feel that you need further appointments, we will
usually be happy to provide them.
